Rebellion in the system. Musical spaces of freedom 1945-89

Exhibition curator
Zbigniew Semik

From rock’n’roll to reggae, stilyagi to punks, Melomani to T.Love Alternative and Praffdata, from Kraków to the coast, from part-confidential jazz jam sessions to the loud and proud Jarocin festival.

Nowa Huta Museum, a branch of the Museum of Krakow, invites you to join us on the journey back in time and space, following the traces of the anti-establishment music from the times of the Polish People’s Republic!

Which four-letter world appalled the authorities during the 1st Jazz Music Festival? How did Edward Gierek impact the fate of Poland’s first rock’n’roll band? Which Polish musician had - despite the reluctance - to be drafted to serve in the Polish People’s Army? Finally - what do the Dezerter Band and rapper Zdechły Osa, both present at the exhibition, have in common? These and other informations are presented at the ‘Rebellion in the System. Musical spaces of freedom 1945-89’ exhibition.

The story of music will be narrated among concert posters, videos, photos, zines and instruments. Apart from watching and listening, the visitors are also in for some dancing, as there’s dance zone awaiting. All the attractions will be surrounded by outstanding artwork by leading Polish artists.
