Catalog to the exhibition presented at the Old Synagogue branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Cracow.
In the catalog accompanying the exhibition there are richly illustrated articles on the architecture, history and social role of the Old Synagogue. The studies devoted to the archeological research conducted at the Old Synagogue in the years 2014 - 2016 and the systematic presentation of the rabbis of the Cracow Jewish community from the Middle Ages to the 20th century are a useful supplement to the knowledge about the history of the monument and the Cracow rabbinate. The book also contains a catalog of objects presented at the exhibition: paintings and graphic works and archaeological monuments, gained during the above-mentioned research at the Old Synagogue in the last three years.
From the time of the uprising until the outbreak of World War II, the Old Synagogue was the uninterrupted primary synagogue of the Cracow Jewish community. It was the center of religious and social life, the center of the spiritual knowledge of the rabbis and the secular authority of kahal seniors.
When the tragedy of the Holocaust ceased to serve as a prayer house, it was designated a new function: it became the seat of the museum of memory of centuries of rich Jewish history and culture in Cracow.
All this makes the Old Synagogue not only the most valuable monument of Jewish sacral architecture, but also the nursery and the mainstay of the traditional culture of Krakow Jews. It is also the best place for a museum exhibition on its own topic, appropriately named for the issue of the theme of the tradition.
