From 2015, work continued on the Underground Nowa Huta project aimed at providing access to several Nowa Huta shelters for exhibition purposes.
On February 28, 2019, the first shelter located under the Mechanical School Complex No. 3 at the Szkolny 37 estate was opened to the public.
The exhibition The state of danger prepared in it tells about the instinctive need to hide from the threat and the most interesting shelter buildings in the world.
The Nowa Huta shelters, today are treated as an interesting relic of the past, were built in the event of an armed conflict, which in the 1950s seemed quite real.
Poland was not a country that would provide its inhabitants with adequate protection in the event of an armed conflict, so it was decided to begin construction of anti-aircraft shelters in newly constructed buildings in 72 cities that were considered the most vulnerable to attack.
The shelters were designed in four strength categories.
They were to protect against air bomb attack and chemical pollution.
Category I constructs were intended for central authorities and TOPL provincial and municipal Command Posts.
Category II shelters were designed for other important locations such as office buildings of authorities and offices as well as political organizations, TOPL command posts of key workplaces.
Shelters of category III and IV were envisaged in other institutions, workplaces and residential buildings.
In the years 1953-1960, over 250 anti-aircraft shelters were erected in Nowa Huta, unfortunately many of them have not survived to their original state today, with the original arrangement of rooms and the basic elements of equipment preserved.
Due to the current needs to change the purpose of these spaces, their reconstruction and liquidation will certainly proceed.
