At the beginning of March 1941, the Governor of the Cracow District-Otto Wächter, established a Jewish quarter in Cracow.
The Ghetto was situated on the right bank of the Vistula river in the Podgórze district. All the Jews from the City were resettled there and all the Jewish instytitions were displaced into that area. The liquidation of the Ghetto took place in two phases-12th and 14th of March. Approximately 3.000 people were killed during the actions and other were sent to the KL Auschwitz. Today it's hard to demo the life in the Ghetto. The district has totally changed after the war. This fact makes the re-creation of apperance of the time very difficult. However, certain buldings where important institutions in teh ghetto were located, as well as courtyards which were scene of tragic events, still remain.
This book guides the visitors while sightseeing the former Ghetto, describing the life of Cracow's Jews and indicating the important places and buildings.
